Over The Counter (OTC)

xxxxxAller-Free (Generic Claritin 10 mg)

Allergy relief accounts for nearly 17 million visits by patients to their doctor annually.  Most of these people suffer from seasonal or temporary allergies.  Because of their proven safety and efficacy, doctors and pharmacists advise the use of a non-drowsy antihistamine.  Furthermore, because of the availability of OTC loratadine, insurance companies are less likely to cover prescription non-drowsy antihistamines such as Zyrtec® and Allegra®.  Hence, patients are more likely to use loratadine as a first line therapy for allergy relief.

xxxxxIbuprofen 220 mg (Generic Motrin/Advil)

Ibuprofen is the most common recommended medicine for pain and inflammation relief.  Unlike acetaminophen (Gen. Tylenol), ibuprofen can treat fever/pain as well as swelling and redness.  Pharmacists also recommend ibuprofen to help relieve symptoms of the flu and cold.  The consumer trusts ibuprofen for common aches and pains and will purchase this product frequently without hesitation.  Since it went OTC in 1984 in the U.S., ibuprofen has already garnered one-fifth of the $2.5 billion yearly sales of OTC analgesics.

xxxxxSimethicone (Generic Gas-X)

Discomfort from gas is a problem encountered by individuals of all ages.  With people living fast paced lives and eating 'on the go', people encounter this problem very frequently.  There is only one ingredient on the market which can alleviate gas and bloating - simethicone.  Hence, this product will sell quickly and frequently.  The total U.S. OTC market for gastrointestinal disorders in 2004 was $2.4 billion. Brand Gas-X sales were nearly $34 million.

xxxxxRanitidine 75 mg (Generic Zantac 75)

Acid relief is a very common problem which patients ask the pharmacist for their recommendation.  Besides the use of common antacids such as Rolaids or Tums, we recommend the use a line of antacids called 'acid-blockers'.  Of the acid blockers, I like to recommend ranitidine because it works fast and is reasonably priced for the average consumer.  Furthermore, we will be releasing ranitidine 150 mg. (Zantac 150) later this year, which is original prescription strength. Currently the world market for ranitidine is close to $ 1 billion & growing at an estimated rate of 5.5%.

xxxxxDiphenhydramine 25 mg (Generic Benadryl)

Diphenhydramine is the market leader of anti-allergy sales capturing nearly 40% of the total annual $3 billion dollar market.  Because diphenhydramine is inexpensive, works fast, and is safe, pharmacists recommend it to treat rashes, hives, swelling, and other allergic reactions. Furthermore, because this medicine causes drowsiness, doctors and pharmacists alike recommend diphenhydramine to help people with sleep trouble.

xxxxxLoperamide 2 mg (Generic Imodium)

There is only one anti-diarrhea medicine on the OTC market - loperamide.  Pharmacists have no other choice but to recommend this product for people needing relief from diarrhea.  People also purchase loperamide to keep in the medicine cabinet, or with them while traveling for emergencies.  We will be offering an attractive package size so that the consumer does not purchase a large quantity he or she may not use.  In 2004, Imodium sales neared $26 million with private label sales reaping an additional $34 million.
